Continued Cleanup of Downtown Market District

Under the Cleaner Kingston Initiative, the KSAMC has continued its focus on improving the downtown market district, with focused interventions in areas including New Chapel Lane, Oxford Mall, Spanish Town Road, Darling and Orange Street. As well as in the Cross road market.

While much work remains to be done, these improvements demonstrate what can be achieved through sustained action and effective coordination. The KSAMC remains committed to maintaining momentum and delivering visible improvements across the downtown market district and beyond.

In addition to improving conditions within these key commercial spaces, the Council has been advancing measures aimed at addressing longstanding concerns relating to parking, public order, and the unauthorized use of public spaces. The KSAMC recognizes that the limited availability of parking in downtown Kingston has contributed to challenges including illegal parking practices, the operation of informal parking attendants, and the occupation of areas designated as non-vending zones.

To address these issues, the Council has been engaging entities involved in the management and operation of on-street parking to explore practical options for  availability and improving the overall management of public spaces. As part of these efforts, a pilot paid-parking project is being implemented along Orange Street. The initiative is intended to support greater order within the area, facilitate the removal of vending activities from prohibited locations, and improve safety, security, and the overall appearance of the downtown environment.

To assist both business operators and shoppers, we are offering business operators first preference to utilize paid parking close to their business operations.
