KSAMC DENOUNCES FALSE CLAIMS OF SHELTER FEES AMID HURRICANE MELISSA PREPARATIONS

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is aware of false information circulating in the public domain alleging that individuals are being charged for admission into emergency shelters in preparation for Hurricane Melissa.

The KSAMC categorically denies these claims. All emergency shelters operated by the KSAMC are free of cost and open to all members of the public who may be affected by the impending weather system.

Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, has strongly condemned the misinformation, describing it as “reckless and irresponsible, especially at a time when accurate information can make the difference between safety and harm.”

“The KSAMC, in collaboration with shelter partners and other national agencies, remains focused on safeguarding lives, particularly among the homeless and those in flood-prone communities. We urge the public to rely solely on official channels for information and updates,” said Mayor Swaby.

The KSAMC continues to coordinate the evacuation of vulnerable individuals across at-risk areas, while ensuring that shelters are adequately staffed and equipped.

Members of the public are reminded to follow official KSAMC communication platforms, government ministries, departments and agencies as well as verifiable media sources for updates and emergency advisories.
