Mayor of Kingston Mourns the Passing of Jimmy Cliff

Jamaicans, at home and in the diaspora, are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our most beloved cultural figures, James Chambers, OM, known to the world as Jimmy Cliff. His loss is felt here in Jamaica and across the global Reggae community that embraced his music and his message.

Jimmy Cliff will always be remembered for the power of his voice and the honesty of his storytelling. His songs spoke to the everyday Jamaican working to overcome life’s many challenges. The spirit that carried him through his own struggles is the same spirit that shaped “The Harder They Come”. His story reminded us that even when the road feels rough, resilience remains one of our strongest traits as a people. He was a true son of the soil. His upbringing, his setbacks, his hopes, and his belief in his own potential are stories that so many Jamaicans see in themselves.

He brought our grit, our humor, our struggles, and our authenticity with him wherever he travelled. Through his voice, many of us heard a reflection of our own experiences and the reminder that even when life feels unfair, we must hold on to who we are. Jimmy Cliff’s journey was also one of achievement and respect. His accolades, including two Grammy Awards such as Best Reggae Album for Rebirth, were acknowledgements of his rare talent and the pride he carried for Jamaica.

As we honour his life, we hold on to the lessons he shared with us. His familiar words, “You can get it if you really want, but you must try, try and try, try again… you will succeed at last,” continue to guide us. They remind us that progress comes through effort, patience, and belief in better days. Mayor of Kingston, His Worship Councillor Andrew Swaby, JP, reflected on his passing and said, “Jimmy Cliff was a national treasure, and a guiding voice for generations. He showed us that greatness can come from humble beginnings, and that determination can carry us far beyond our circumstances.

”Hail the legend, Jimmy Cliff.
